Scottish-German doctorates at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences

On Wednesday, 25th February 2009 the President of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), Prof. Dr. Michael Stawicki, and the Principal of the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), Prof. Dr. Seamus McDaid, signed an agreement on the joint supervision of doctoral theses. This means that in future in some areas, including health sciences and environmental engineering, academic colleagues participating in research projects at HAW Hamburg will be able to receive doctorates from the UWS. UWS doctorates are recognised in Germany. At the present time, HAW Hamburg is not able to grant the degree of doctor independently.





An active research community has become established at a high level in some specialist areas at HAW Hamburg over the past 10 to 15 years. The new cooperation agreement with UWS supports this academic activity. The guidelines for the new researchers and their supervisors will be the standards of the British accreditation agency (QAA, Quality Assurance Agency).


In a statement, Prof. Dr. Michael Stawicki, President of HAW Hamburg, said: "For many years, there has been a discussion in Germany about the right
of universities of applied sciences to grant doctorates. The governing CDU-Green coalition in Hamburg has therefore raised the prospect of allowing HAW Hamburg to grant doctorates in certain areas of excellence as a pilot project. The cooperation agreement that has now been made with the UWS means that the path to a doctorate will be opened for other talented young researchers at HAW Hamburg."
