The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) opens its annual Summer University on Monday, June 20th, 2011. This year’s topic is: “Post-Socialist Cultures and Societies”. The school addresses the political, social, economic, and cultural changes in the transformational societies of Central- and Eastern Europe in the past twenty years after the final collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Viadrina Summer University offers a systematic overview over typical situations and problems Post-Socialist societies are dealing with. The academic formats of study, including lectures, seminars and work-shops will be supplemented by excursions, round-tables, and discussions offering first-hand, daily-life experience of the political, social, economic and cultural life in the region Berlin and Brandenburg.

The Key-Note Lecture will be held Monday 20th June by Professor Claus Offe, Professor of Political Sociology, Hertie School of Governance, Berlin. Offe is one of the leading experts in the study of transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe. He has published and edited numerous books and articles on the political, institutional and socio-economic changes in Post-Socialist societies. The Summer School’s teaching staff is formed of Viadrina-University Professors as well as of guest-lecturers who are renowned scholars from top-universities and acclaimed research centers in Germany, Europe, and the USA.

The school welcomes 24 foreign student-participants arriving at Frankfurt (Oder) virtually from all over the world: From Mexico and China, from South Africa and Brazil, from Britain and Ukraine, from Poland, Russia and the US; students from the Viadrina University will also actively take part in the academic and leisure time program. The Summer University running for more than two weeks is generously supported by funding from the DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service.
